Description
Bortezomib, sold under the brand name Velcade among others, is an anti-cancer medication used to treat multiple myeloma and mantle cell lymphoma.
- VELCADE, in combination with melphalan and prednisone is indicated for the treatment of patients with previously untreated multiple myeloma who are not candidates for high dose chemotherapy.
- VELCADE, as part of combination therapy, is indicated for induction therapy prior to high dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue for patients under 65 years of age with previously untreated multiple myeloma.
- VELCADE is also indicated for the treatment of multiple myeloma patients who have
received at least one prior therapy, and who have progressive disease. - VELCADE in combination with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin and prednisone is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with previously untreated mantle cell lymphoma.
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, low platelets, fever, numbness, low white blood cells, shortness of breath, rash and abdominal pain. Other severe side effects include low blood pressure, tumour lysis syndrome, heart failure, and reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome. It is in the class of medications known as proteasome inhibitor. It works by inhibiting proteasomes, cellular complexes that break down proteins.
Bortezomib was approved for medical use in the United States in 2003 and in the European Union in 2004. It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.
