Mercaptopurine
Mercaptopurine is used alone or with other chemotherapy drugs to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL; also called acute lymphoblastic leukemia and acute lymphatic leukemia; a type of cancer that begins in the white blood cells). Mercaptopurine is in a class of medications called purine antagonists.
Mercaptopurine: Uses, Side Effects and Medicines
Mercaptopurine (6-MP), sold under the brand name Purinethol among others, is a medication used for cancer and autoimmune diseases. Specifically it is used to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. For acute lymphocytic leukemia it is generally used with methotrexate.
Mercaptopurine was approved for medical use in the United States in 1953. It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.
